Australian passport holders:
Due to a visa agreement in power between Hungary and Australia, Australian passport holders can travel to Hungary without a visa for less than 90 days in a 180 days period.
Citizens of third countries requiring a visa:
Third country passport holders do need a so called Schengen Visa in case they would like to travel to Hungary which is valid for 90 days. Due to a visa agreement in power between Switzerland and Hungary the Consulate General of Switzerland in Sydney is competent to issue Schengen visas if you are required to obtain a Schengen visa and your main destination is Hungary in the Schengen Area.

Long term visa:
Anyone who wishes to stay for a period exceeding 90 days in Hungary must apply for a residence permit visa (aka long-term stay visa).
Australian passport holders may file their application directly in Hungary at the respective Regional Directorate for Aliens Policing (Immigration Authority).
